Prepare a mountain cabin for winter with simple checks
A seasonal closing list for warmth, water, food and the small repairs that are easier before the first hard freeze.
Winter preparation is mostly a practice of reducing surprises. Walk the cabin slowly, check the places where water, cold and darkness meet, and leave a short note for the next arrival. The aim is not to make a remote place behave like a city apartment; it is to make its limits legible.
Start with water
Look at taps, exposed pipes and any place where a leak would be difficult to notice. Close, drain or protect what the cabin setup requires, and record what you did while it is fresh.
Make warmth visible
Check the condition of kindling, fuel and the route from storage to the stove. Keep the first fire simple. A clear, dry starting point is more useful than a large pile hidden behind other things.
Leave a welcome for spring
Remove food that will not keep, empty damp-prone containers and write down the one task that should happen first on return. A good closing note is a gift to your future self.
